What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Fillings are used to fill in small pits (cavities) that form in teeth as the result of overexposure to harmful bacteria and acidic plaque. This stops the decay from spreading and strengthens the tooth. In the past, fillings were always made of a material called silver amalgam, which was a mix of metals. Although amalgam is very strong, it has some major drawbacks. For example, it has a dark color that clashes with natural teeth. It is also composed of around 50% mercury.
Tooth-colored fillings are different. They are made of biocompatible composite resin that is shade-matched to blend in with the surrounding dentition. They are also completely metal-free.
The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling
The process of getting a tooth-colored filling is easy and takes just one appointment!
To get things started, we will likely numb your tooth (if a cavity is very shallow, you might not even need local anesthetic). Then, we will remove decayed tissue from inside the cavity. Once that is done, we insert the tooth-colored resin and harden it with a special curing light. To finish things, we adjust and polish the filling so it will not interfere with your bite or cause discomfort.
Your tooth may experience an increase in sensitivity after the filling is placed, but no real downtime is necessary.
The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings offer some impressive benefits when you compare them to their old-fashioned amalgam counterparts:
- Natural Appearance: Tooth-colored fillings are shade-matched to surrounding teeth, making them virtually unnoticeable in your smile.
- Metal-Free Composition: These fillings are made without any metals, which eliminates the risk of metal allergies and concerns about mercury exposure.
- Conservative Treatment: Only a minimal amount of tooth structure is removed during preparation, allowing you to preserve as much of your dentition as possible.
- Strong Bonding to Tooth Structure: Composite resin bonds directly to enamel, providing additional support and helping to strengthen the treated tooth.
- Reduced Sensitivity to Temperatures: Composite materials do not conduct heat and cold as metals do, which may reduce post-treatment sensitivity.
- Quick and Comfortable Procedure: Placement typically requires only one appointment, and adjustments are made to ensure that your bite feels natural and comfortable.
