What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the soft tissue around the roots of the teeth. Its early stage is called gingivitis. As it progresses, it becomes periodontitis.
A variety of factors can contribute to the development of gum disease, including poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetic factors, hormonal changes (such as those that occur during pregnancy), and a poor diet. According to some estimates, almost half of U.S. adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
Some of the most common signs of gingivitis include:
- Red, swollen, tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Chronic bad breath
- Minor gum recession
Gingivitis can be quite subtle, but periodontitis often causes more noticeable symptoms. It can cause all the same issues as gingivitis, but they tend to be more severe. Periodontitis may also cause:
- Deep pockets between the teeth and gums
- Loose teeth
- Tooth loss
- Changes in the fit of restorations or dentures
- Bite changes
How Do We Treat Gum Disease?
When you visit us for treatment, Dr. Kiesel and our team will examine your mouth in order to determine the extent of your gum disease. Some mild cases can be reversed via thorough at-home oral hygiene; our team can coach you on exactly what you should do and follow up with you to check your progress. In other cases, more extensive care is required. For example, you might need scaling and root planing.
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is basically a deep cleaning of the mouth. During this procedure, we remove plaque and bacteria from both above and below the gumline. We also smooth out the surfaces of your tooth roots so bacteria find it more difficult to cling to them. This treatment can get rid of an active infection and give your mouth the opportunity to heal.
